FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Camper Conversion Modules

Still unsure which modules fit your vehicle? Here you'll find the most important answers about modular camper conversions.

What are camper conversion modules?

Camper conversion modules are removable camping furniture and systems that allow a vehicle to be flexibly converted into a camper – without permanent modifications to the vehicle.

For which vehicles are the VanEssa camping modules / camper conversions suitable?

The camping conversion modules are suitable for over 100 different vans and mini-campers of various brands and models from VW, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Citroen, Opel, Peugeot, and many more, for example, from the Renault Kangoo to the VW T6, via the Citroen Spaceourer, and back to the Fiat Doblo. You can discover suitable solutions using the vehicle finder. We build complete camping modules for panel vans, specifically the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter L2H2, including insulation, paneling, panel van conversion modules, electrical systems, etc.

Can the modules be adapted or relocated later?

Yes. Many systems are designed as modular kits and can be combined, expanded, and removed as needed. The necessary mounting option, such as an existing vehicle rail system or anchor points, or a base plate, is always a prerequisite.

Can I buy individual modules separately?

Yes. Many modules can be chosen individually and, if necessary, combined with other camping furniture.

How much weight can the rear pull-out hold?

The maximum load capacity is 250 kg. Our rear slides are designed for high loads and offer sufficient stability for camping and/or sports equipment, coolers, kitchen modules, and/or luggage.

How is the rear pull-out attached to the vehicle?

The rear pull-out is attached vehicle-specifically and securely. Depending on the vehicle model, we use the existing rail system or mounting points, so no modifications or drilling are necessary on the vehicle.

Which camping modules for vans or which mini-camper conversion modules fit in my vehicle as a combination?

This depends on the size of the vehicle and the car's equipment (rails or lashing eyes, etc.). Fundamentally, in a van the size of a panel van, you can fit conversion modules such as a rear kitchen or rear extension combined with a sleeping system for the kitchen, usually a camper interior conversion module for storage space and accessories, as well as electrical equipment if necessary. In a minivan, there is usually no room for a storage module. You can find the details in the product description for your vehicle.

Can I continue to use my vehicle in everyday life?

Yes. The modular design makes it possible to use the vehicle flexibly for everyday life as well as for travel.

Are the rear seats still usable?

Yes. In most cases, we offer systems where the rear seats are retained. Basically, whether the benches and individual seats can remain in the car depends on the vehicle model and the selected module camper conversion. This is usually stated in the product description.

How long does it take to convert a van or minivan into a camper?

Many solutions are quickly assembled and make your vehicle ready for travel in a short time (often in just 10 minutes).

Does VanEssa convert all van models into campers?

No. We exclusively build out the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter panel van L2H2 with the specially developed panel van conversion modules from VanEssa mobilcamping.

What is the lying surface area of the sleep systems?

The lying surface varies depending on the vehicle model and conversion concept. You can find the exact dimensions on the respective product pages.

What mattresses are used for the sleep systems?

We use very high-quality mattresses made from a Viscotherm and cold foam mixture, perfectly adapted to the vehicles, which compensate for all unevenness such as shoulders, hips, etc. from below. They are foldable and enclosed with upholstery fleece and durable, easy-care covers.

Is a sink integrated into the kitchen systems?

Yes. The kitchen modules combine a sink with two bowls. Fresh water is supplied by a water canister and pump, and the Oslo kitchen module also includes a separate wastewater canister. The Sprinter indoor kitchen has a separate fresh and wastewater system connected. All kitchen systems offer you a cooking facility, a pull-out for the compressor cooler and various drawer pull-outs for storage.

What cooking options are there?

In kitchen systems for vans and minicampervans, a pull-out unit with a gas stove is installed – a mobile cooking system for flexible use, including outdoors. The indoor kitchen of the VanEssa Camper Sprinter offers an induction cooktop integrated into the side folding table on the kitchen module. Additionally, the VanEssa Camper offers an outdoor grill station with a 2-burner Primus stove on a folding table at the kitchen module.

What accessories are available?

Depending on the vehicle and its setup, there is accessories such as saddlebags, coolers, mosquito nets, blackout blinds, ventilation systems, electrical components, and other practical extras.

Can I install the modules myself?

Yes. The VanEssa camping modules for vans and minicampers are designed so that you can usually install them without professional help and without special tools – no drilling, gluing, or velcro, meaning no permanent vehicle modifications. The camping modules for panel vans are fully built out by us in the Sprinter into complete campers.

Is there information and support for installation before and after purchase?

Yes. You can schedule an in-person appointment with your vehicle or a video call at any time. Our service team will explain each step to you. Additionally, you will receive written installation or operating instructions.

Can I have a used Sprinter converted, or does it have to be a new vehicle?

Yes. We build out used customer vehicles as well as new vehicles.

How much does a Sprinter conversion cost?

The costs depend on the scope and equipment. We would be happy to provide a personalized quote.

How long does a van conversion take?

Depending on the project scope, the build-out time is typically a few weeks.

How does the design process for your VanEssa Sprinter camper go?

After a needs analysis, we will create an expansion concept together and completely outfit your Sprinter at our plant in Großhöhenrain according to the agreed-upon quote. You can observe the progress at any time by appointment. Delivery will then take place upon completion.

Is the Sprinter conversion individually configurable?

No. Because 50 years of camping experience and soon also a decade with the Sprinter repeatedly show that our conversion is the most sensible layout and the technical background for the ideal camper conversion. Of course, we take customer requests into account to find the perfect choice of furniture, electrical systems, water systems, heating, and other components.

Will my road bikes and mountain bikes fit on the Sprinter bike rack?

Yes. The bicycle holder on the inside of the tailgate is custom-fitted to your bikes. However, please clarify the possible bicycle dimensions with our installation team beforehand.

How many wheels can the bike rack hold and what is the maximum weight the bike rack can hold in the Sprinter?

The bike rack carries a maximum of two bikes, including e-bikes. It carries a maximum of 50 kilograms.

Where can I charge my e-bike in the VanEssa Sprinter for the next tour?

On the inside of the rear, directly below the bike rack, is a charging station for your e-bikes.

What equipment is possible with the VanEssa camper conversion for the Sprinter?

Depending on the project, including among other things: sleeping areas, kitchens (indoor and outdoor), bathroom cabins including shower and toilet, storage solutions, seating areas, windows, vehicle floor, insulation, cladding, awning, solar system, battery systems, electrical installation, diesel air heater, fresh and wastewater.

Can a van, minivan, or Sprinter become self-sufficient?

Yes. This depends on the chosen electrical and solar equipment at our factory. Many customers use their vehicles independently of campsites for several days.

Can a solar system be retrofitted?

Yes. Many systems can be extended later.

Does my van or mini-camper need to be registered as a motorhome?

No. Since the modules are removable, the vehicle can still be used as a passenger car. Your individual situation should be clarified with the registration authority, if necessary. We will handle the TÜV papers for the camper conversion of our Sprinter into a camper in cooperation with TÜV.

Can I register my VanEssa camper (VanEssa Sprinter conversion to a camper) as a motorhome?

Yes. Yes, we monitor the process and provide support for the required documentation and approvals. We are already preparing the necessary TÜV papers for the motorhome re-registration in collaboration with TÜV. You will then handle the registration at the licensing office yourself.
