In a fully equipped VW bus through Iceland - our road trip with VanEssa

VanEssa VW Bus traveling through Iceland

Hey, we're Steffi & Flo and we spent about 3 weeks on the road in Iceland with our fully equipped VW bus from VanEssa mobilcamping - including rear kitchen, sleeping system, inner tower and swivel passenger seat. Maximum comfort and tidiness in a small space - perfect for any adventure.

Our road trip began in Seyðisfjörður, where Steffi arrived after a two-day ferry trip from Denmark via the Faroe Islands. Nestled between waterfalls and high mountains, the place is a real gem at the end of the world. Flo joined us the next day at Keflavík airport and from there we started our tour to the impressive landscapes of Iceland: Geldingadalir volcano, Brúarfoss and finally to the Geysir campsite for our first overnight stay.

We continued south to Vík í Mýrdal. Early in the morning, we visited Black Sand Beach to enjoy the impressive coastal landscape without the crowds. We continued on to the famous Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach. A particular highlight was the Mulagljúfur Canyon, which we explored before continuing north.

We spent the night at the Flókalundur campsite in the Westfjords and were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights - a magical experience. We then headed north-east across the Highlands via Hrossaborg to the Askja area. On the way, we stopped at the Ásbyrgi campsite and explored the landscape around Lake Botnstjörn, Lake Mývatn and Nýidalur. Our next stop was the Landmannalaugar campsite, where we not only spent the night, but also repaired our parking heater and used the surrounding area for hiking.

After a few days in Landmannalaugar, we headed back to Vík, where Flo used our van as a home office - no problem thanks to the swivel passenger seat and integrated table in the interior tower. We went on a bike tour and filmed with Stefan Erdmann who accompanied us in between. The following day, we continued filming around Vík before driving along the East Fjords and shooting more videos in Hamar Kaffihús - including our introduction video for the rear kitchen.

Our last stops took us to Stuðlagil Canyon and back to Seyðisfjörður, where we spent the last two days before taking the ferry back home.

Iceland is full of contrasts - from black sand beaches to steaming hot springs and snow-covered glaciers. With our van and the equipment from VanEssa mobilcamping, we were able to explore all these places flexibly and comfortably. Our tip for you is to have four-wheel drive and high ground clearance in your vehicle, always have a full tank and sufficient provisions, water and electricity, as well as a tow rope and hook, as you often have to plan for river crossings, some of which are 80 cm deep, and bumpy paths. It is usually quietest for tourists early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Well equipped and prepared, every road trip through Iceland becomes a real dream adventure.
